Wicked play, around the world

Now playing: Wicked. This is it, the biggest thing to hit Oz in years: the award-winning musical based on Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The book is by Winnie Holzman, the music by Stephen Schwartz, and the show is directed by Joe Mantello. It has done so well, it has spawned the following sit-down companies:

Now through June 19, 2011: The Wizard of Oz play, John W. Engeman Theater at Northport, Northport, New York. As part of their Children's Theater series, the theater is presenting late-in-the-morning performances of The Wizard of Oz Saturday and Sunday mornings. Now through June 27, 2011: "Cyclones on the Prairies: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the Arts & Crafts of Publishing, Chicago, 1900" exhibit, Book Club of California, San Francisco, California. The Book Club of California's latest exhibit showcases The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the rest of the Oz series, as well as the career of L. Frank Baum. Peter E. Hanff, from whose collection much of the exhibit comes from, will give a talk on the final day. Now through September 10, 2011: The Wizard of Oz Children's Educational Exhibition, Boston Children's Museum, Boston, Massachusetts. First created to celebrate the seventieth anniversary of the famous movie version, this interactive museum exhibit shows elements of science while visitors travel the Yellow Brick Road. Now through December 31, 2011: 150 Things I Love About Kansas exhibit, Kansas Museum of History, Topeka, Kansas. To celebrate the state's sesquicentennial (it was admitted to the Union on January 29, 1861), the Kansas Museum of History is presenting an exhibit of 150 Things I Love About Kansas. Celebrating 100 Years, New York City, New York

Now through December 31, 2011: "Celebrating 100 Years" exhibit, Gottesman Exhibition Hall, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the New York Public Library, New York City, New York. The famous Beaux-Arts main branch of the New York Public Library, at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street in Manhattan, opened in 1911, and so it's celebrating its centennial this year. Of special interest to Oz fans (besides the library's use as the Cowardly Lion's home in the film version of The Wiz) is that some of the library's collection of W. W. Denslow's original art for the novel of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz will be on display. The exhibit is free, and docent-led tours meet outside the entrance to Gottesman Exhibition Hall on the Library's first floor. Hollywood Memorabilia Auction, Beverly Hills, California

June 18, 2011: Debbie Reynolds Hollywood Memorabilia Auction, The Paley Center for Media, Beverly Hills, California. Besides her own stellar movie career, Debbie Reynolds has also been one of the greatest collectors of Hollywood memorabilia for several decades, acquiring props and costumes from the silent era all the way through today. Her dream had been to open a museum, but now she's decided that it isn't going to happen, and is instead auctioning off her collection through Profiles in History. Among the many, many items are a dress and ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland for The Wizard of Oz, but that didn't appear in the film itself. These were tested and ultimately rejected. The ruby slippers are the fabled "Arabian" pair, designed to match W. W. Denslow's original illustrations. Toto Memorial Marker Dedication, Hollywood, California

June 18, 2011: Toto Memorial Marker Dedication, Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Hollywood, California. She was originally named Terry, but once she gained fame as Toto in The Wizard of Oz, the show biz veteran gained a new name. She passed away in the mid-'40s, and her original memorial marker was destroyed to make way for a freeway. But her dedicated fans have raised the funds for a new marker, a life-sized bronze statue, at the Hollywood Forever cemetery, and today is the dedication, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring their pets. The Wizard of Oz presented by John Waters, Chicago, Illinois

June 18, 2011: The Wizard of Oz presented by John Waters, Music Box Theatre, Chicago, Illinois. See the famous 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz as it was meant to be seen, on a big screen with hundreds of fellow fans. This screening is presented and hosted by cult film maker John Waters, who will take questions after the show and then present his 1974 movie, Female Trouble. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz exhibit, Kalamazoo, Michigan

June 18-September 5, 2011: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz museum exhibit, Kalamazoo Valley Museum, Kalamazoo, Michigan. The traveling children's museum exhibit has made its way to Michigan. Based on the original novel by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow, visitors step into the book and follow the yellow brick road through interactive exhibits. June 24, 2011: The Wiz, national cablecast, BET. The 1978 movie adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical version of The Wizard of Oz gets a national cable airing on BET. Stars include Diana Ross as Dorothy, Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, and Richard Pryor as the Wiz. June 25: "Watch This Book: The Wizard of Oz", Luther Burbank Elementary School, Long Beach, California. Long Beach Cinematheque presents the famous 1939 film verison of The Wizard of Oz as part of their "Watch This Book" series of movies based on famous books. The show starts at 8:15 p.m., but you may want to show up early for performances by musicians Alicia Murphy and MajicBulletTheory, which start at 4:00 p.m. It's all part of a monthly Long Beach community street event. The Witches of Oz, nationwide cablecast, Syfy UK

July 5 and 12, 2011: The Witches of Oz miniseries, nationwide cablecast (United Kingdom), Syfy UK. The new Oz miniseries event makes its world debut on the British version of Syfy. Dorothy is now grown up and a children's book writer in New York City, telling the stories she's made up about her adventures in Oz. But when the witches come to the Big Apple to exact their revenge, Dorothy discovers that her stories are all too real. Fortunately, she also has friends helping her out as well. After landing in the Land Of Fu after a storm, Dorethy, from the small town of Kroonstad, goes on a journey to find the Wizard to help her get home. All is not well in the land though. People are missing things. The Lion is missing his courage, Mr. Tin has lost his heart, the Scarecrow has lost his dancing skills, Miley Cyrus has lost Hannah Montana and Justin Beiber has lost his voice!! July 11-22, 2011: Oz Forever workshop, Lakewood Center for the Arts, Lake Oswego, Oregon. This is an acting workshop for young thespians, aged 7 to 16, culminating in the public performance of the original musical Forever Oz. It's forty years later, and Dorothy's grandchildren are now off to Oz, where they meet the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, Cowardly Lion, and the new Wizard of Oz. August 5-7, 2011: The International Wizard of Oz Club's National Oz Convention, Banner Elk, North Carolina. The Oz Club brings its annual convention to the site of the Wizard of Oz theme park of the 1970s, where many of the attractions still stand. The International Wizard of Oz Club's National Convention, Macatawa, Michigan

August 17-19, 2012: The International Wizard of Oz Club's National Convention, Holland, Michigan. L. Frank Baum's old summer home, The Sign of the Goose, was in the resort town of Macatawa, on the shore of Lake Michigan. Baum even poked fun at his neighbors in his pseudonymous book, Tamawaca Folks. And the old Ozmopolitan Convention was held for many years at nearby Castle Park. So the Oz Club returns to the area to celebrate islands and castles and homes ("Oh, my!"). The main convention venue will be the Doubletree Inn in Holland. Already lined up for the weekend is a dramatization of Tamawaca Folks. Keep an eye here for updates and further information.

Oz: The Great and Powerful, North American (at least) movie release

March 8, 2013: Oz: The Great and Powerful movie premiere, North America-wide (at least) release. The newest Oz movie is on its way to a theater near you. This prequel from Disney features James Franco as a balloonist and magician who is swept away to a magic land and is confronted by witches. It is tentatively scheduled to open in theaters all over the United States and Canada (and possibly other parts of the world), some even in 3-D. More details will be given here when there are some.
