Universal Studios, as one of the entities that produced the play, have the movie rights to the musical version of ''Wicked'', and they have been moving it along. They originally announced a release date of December 20, 2019, but it didn't progress very far, and so the date was given to the film version of ''Cats'' instead (for which Universal's rights were running out). Universal then set a release date of December 22, 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic pushed much of Universal's production and release schedule back, and that spot was given to ''Sing 2''.
