About this website

This site is devoted to The Wizard of Oz and its resulting sequels and spin-offs, and is meant for informational and educational purposes only. It is a personal site, not a commercial site. It is solely the work of Eric Gjovaag, who is responsible for its contents. All questions regarding this site should be addressed to him. No, I am not looking for a sponsor, nor do I wish to have advertisements cluttering up this site.

Why do I have this website?

It's kind of amusing, actually, how circumstance has brought this about so that you can enjoy reading it now. Anyone who knows me for more than about five minutes soon finds out that I am a Wizard of Oz fan. I've been reading and collecting Oz books for nearly forty years now (and I'm not even fifty yet), and it's always had a warm place in my heart. I also have one of those annoying brains that can absorb all kinds of trivia and other useless information and spit it out almost at will (and yes, I should get on Jeopardy! or Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, where I think my brain will help me out quite a bit). So I've always had a good grasp of Ozian knowledge. When I got wired up to the Information Superhighway in the early '90s, I quickly carved out a niche as an online Oz expert — not by design, just by accident. And do you know how many times I've had to answer some of the same questions over and over again? Especially the one about the hanging man in The Movie? I also saw a few other Oz fans try their hands at Oz FAQs, and to me, they fell short, mainly assuming that the reader already was familiar with a lot about Oz in the first place. So late in 1995, I decided to write my own comprehensive Wizard of Oz FAQ. Once I was finished, I needed a way to get the information out there so people could read it. By this time my wife had already started her awesome Aquaman website, so it seemed only natural for me to start up a website as well. After thinking about a Doctor Who page (I'm a fan of that show as well) and deciding there were enough of those already, I decided to make mine an exclusively Wizard of Oz site, as my wife's general page was enough for gossip and stuff about both of us, and I had been less than impressed with the few Wizard of Oz sites I'd seen up to that time. So, this site debuted early in 1996, primarily as a way to present my FAQ. Over the years, however, I've thought of other areas to add, and it has evolved into the website you are wandering around in right now — and I hope more changes will be coming in the future. (If you have any suggestions for what you'd like to see on this website, feel free to e-mail me.)

Who Is Eric Gjovaag?

In case you were wondering, Eric Gjovaag was born in 1966 in Seattle, Washington, USA. He lived for a short time with his parents and younger sister in Seattle before everyone moved to Wenatchee, then the family settled on Bainbridge Island, just west of Seattle via ferry. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1984 with honors, and while there he was involved in theater, the school paper, the cross-country and track teams, and the math club. He also did his first work on a computer there, an old clunky TRS-80 Model 1. After taking a year off to work, he went to Western Washington University, where he graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor's degree in Education. He is currently working as a teacher in eastern Washington, among the cows and grapes, and nearing completion of his Master's degree from City University. He has been married to the former Laura Jean Dunham since 1994, after they met over the Internet. In addition to The Wizard of Oz, his interests include the BBC science-fiction television series Doctor Who and reading (which he doesn't have enough time to do anymore). Among his Ozzy accomplishments are several articles and reviews published in The Baum Bugle, The Oz Observer, and The Oz Gazette, being a Contributing Editor to Oziana and The Baum Bugle, attending every single Winkie Convention since 1980, being involved with the Oogaboo Rendezvous since they began in 1978 (including hosting more events than anyone), chairing the 1993 Winkie Convention, earning the 1997 Winkie Award, winning several quizzes and awards for fiction, non-fiction, and art at Club conventions, co-authoring the novel Queen Ann in Oz with fellow Northwest Oz fan Karyl Carlson, winning the 2013 L. Frank Baum Memorial Award from the International Wizard of Oz Club — as well as putting up this award-winning website.

Not to be taken internally. Discontinue use if rash develops, or fever lasts for more than a week. Close cover before striking. Please fasten your seat belt and extinguish all smoking materials. No Munchkins were harmed in the production of this website. Open other end. Shake well before using. No, really, there was no hanging man in that scene in The Movie, it really was a bird, I've seen it with my own eyes. Substantial penalty for early withdrawal. Your mileage may vary. Big Brother is watching you. Do not use if seal is broken or has changed color, or button does not pop up. Alcohol and mathematics do not mix, so please, don't drink and derive. Caution: Flammable. May cause drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, sore throat, scratchy eyes, blurred vision, vertigo, brittle or thinning hair, ringing in the ears, heart palpitations, athlete's foot, purple spiders to crawl out your nose, or giant grasshoppers to devour Cleveland — but those are all really, really unlikely. Please don't surf the web and drive at the same time, it's hard to keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel. Read to your children, as often as you can from as much as you can, even newspapers or the backs of cereal boxes; they'll thank you later. Elvis is dead and the Titanic sank, so get over it and move on with your life. The Seattle Mariners rule! The Computer is your friend! Ooo wa, ooo wa, why do fools fall in love? Are you still reading this? Okay, hang on, we're almost done. Not affiliated with the Columbia Broadcasting System or its affiliates and subsidiaries. Use of this website with Happy Fun Ball is strongly discouraged. Pi is an irrational number. For your own protection, keep hands and feet inside the car at all times. The speed of light is not just a good idea, it's a law of physics — until someone invents warp drive. Dolphin safe! Gluten free! You can safely not worry about anything I've said in this paragraph, it was all meant in fun, but I do hope you'll still read to your kids. If you have no kids, borrow someone else's kids, just remember to return them after a reasonable amount of time. Or you may want to volunteer to read at your local school, they can use all the help they can get. And it was too a bird!
